Walter Furlan Signed Murano Glass “Man and Woman with Hat” Omaggio a Picasso Sculpture, 2003
\
An exceptional large-scale Murano glass sculpture by celebrated Italian glass artist Walter Furlan, titled “Uomo e Donna con Cappello,” translated as “Man and Woman with Hat.” Created in 2003 as part of Furlan’s acclaimed Omaggio a Picasso series, this striking work reinterprets Picasso’s Cubist imagery through the centuries-old tradition of Venetian glassmaking. The sculpture depicts overlapping male and female faces beneath a dramatically sweeping hat. Vibrant layers of red, cobalt blue, yellow, amber, black, white and clear glass create a bold architectural composition with expressive facial features and remarkable depth. The profiles appear to shift as the sculpture is viewed from different angles, giving the piece a dynamic presence from every side. Walter Furlan was internationally recognized for translating the work of influential twentieth-century artists into sculptural glass. His Picasso-inspired pieces are among his most identifiable creations, combining traditional Murano craftsmanship with modern figurative abstraction. This sculpture is accompanied by extensive supporting documentation, including a Certificate of Authenticity dated December 4, 2003, identifying the work as Uomo e Donna con Cappello by Maestro Vetraio Walter Furlan. The certificate records the original purchaser and describes the sculpture as “Prima Scelta,” indicating first-quality production. Additional documentation includes Murano gallery materials, catalog references, photographs of related works from the Omaggio a Picasso collection and correspondence from Vetreria Franco Schiavon. In written correspondence from 2018, the gallery identified the sculpture and provided an estimated value equivalent to approximately $14,000 to $17,000 USD at that time. This historical valuation is included as supporting documentation and is not represented as a current certified appraisal. A commanding and highly collectible example of Walter Furlan’s work, this sculpture offers an exceptional combination of scale, color, documented provenance and recognizable Picasso-inspired design.
